How I am Motivating my family to eat healthy

Happy Monday! It has been a while since I have posted. Life has been very busy. If you have been following me on the IG, you probably have seen my stories of everything I have been eating lately, I truly think I have found a passion for treating my body well and also encouraging others to do the same. I have been on a small mission to get my family, and this does include my husband LOL, to join me in being more conscious of what we eat daily. I would be lying if I said that we always eat healthy, but we are off to a great start. Here are some small things I have been doing to encourage everyone to make small changes.

Ditched the Junk Food at home

I used to be the person who would stock up on junk food when going grocery shopping. Over the years, I have started limiting the junk food from our grocery store hauls to almost completely no junk food in our home. I have replaced junk food with fresh fruits and cleaner, more nutritious snack options. This doesn’t mean at all that we deprive ourselves from chips, ice cream, or any of the junk food everyone loves! If we want ice cream, we go get a scoop! If we want chips, we go to the store and get a bag. If we want candy, sure, let’s go get some! We are not by any means cutting junk food from our life, but we are not making it as accessible to reach for at home.

A huge plus is that if we are getting ice cream, we luckily live so close to the beach we can grab a scoop nearby and enjoy a nice walk along the beach.

Setting the Example

I speak only positivity about my love for eating healthier. Sure, I love that it helps me maintain a healthy ideal weight, but do you want to know what I truly love about it? It makes me feel GOOD. I sleep BETTER, I feel STRONG. It makes my skin glow, gives me ENERGY, and it makes me really happy. I make sure my kids feel my enthusiasm and see where it comes from. I want them to know that eating healthier has so many more benefits than they know that will make a big impact on their present and future lifestyle. Kids pay attention to what you eat and how you feel.

Encouraging them

My kids love vegetables and fruits. Any kind, they will eat it. They started off loving them since the beginings stages of eating because of my parents and in laws introducing them in their meals. Part of what has helped them continue to eat those vegetables and try new ones is our encouragement. We make it fun by finding new ways to cook or serve a vegetable. With the little ones we try to make it look fun on the plate. With our oldest and even ourselves we try cooking it different, adding different spices and even making our own dipping sauces to go with them.

More Meals together at home

Truth is, we used to eat out alot when our two girls were smaller before we had out little Damian. Having 3 kids really does make you realize two things. First, it is harder to eat out somewhere when every different aged child has their own busy schedule. Second, It is alot more expensive to eat out as a family of 5.

This plus wanting to eat healthier has encouraged us the past years to enjoy our time more at home for dinner. I don’t enjoy cooking. My husband has a passion for it, and I must say he is an excellent cook. Together, we can whip up some pretty good meals for the family. While not every night is a healthy meal, any home cooked meal to me is tastier and healthier than eating out. Plus, you have leftovers!

We try to incorporate veggies, some good protein, and healthy fats into each meal.

Have healthy snacks available

Apples with peanut butter

I love when my kids enjoy and ask for snacks that are simple and good for them. Trader Joes has been my favorite over the years. My kids love their organic apple sauce crushers, their hummus and chips and their chili lime rolled tortilla chips (Great alternative to Takis). Costco has been on top of their game recently with their Strawberry Probiotic Yoggies, Made Good granola minis, and their Like Air Cinnamon Bun flavored puffs. Another good tip is to have fruit cup up and ready to go. My husband always cuts it and has it stored in containers as soon as we bring it home or it won’t get eaten and go bad. Anything in the fridge is always easy access to be grabbed and taken. Try cutting an apple placing it on a plate with some peanut butter in the middle. You will be surprised how much more appetizing it will look to your family than a regular apple!

I don’t stress…

I 100% understand that we all need a healthy balance in what we eat. We can’t always eat healthy and we can’t always avoid the “bad foods.” I never want to take the fun out of eating because I myself sometimes have no control on the weekends. It’s totally ok and normal and we need that balance in our lives. What I do want them all to do is to make it a habit to naturally want to reach for the healthier options. To learn that we can eat everything we want but in moderation.

Like every mom, I want my family to live a very long, healthy life. I want them to have a healthy relationship with what they put in their body. I want them to know that the benefits of eating health can be endless. From a good mental state, a healthy heart, and many more advantages that lead to a happier and more fulfilled life.

Who do you stay healthy for?
