5 Non-Negotiables for me as a running mom

Hi friends, my BIG WEEk is here! With my second marathon coming up in just a couple of days, I wanted to share 5 things I absolutely could not run without. If I’m being honest, you don’t need a lot for runs, just motivation, consistency, and believing in yourself. The next 5 things definitely add to a great run routine, though, in my opinion! These have all been true and tested over the years through trial and error by ME. If you’re heading out for a run, make sure that the next 5 things are part of your run routine.

Investing in good quality shoes

Always invest in your running shoes. This is very important and the biggest non-negotiable for me. Your feet are very important, and you need to take care of them. I have always chosen Asics as my choice for all my training blocks and daily runs. I’ve gone from loving the Kayanos to trying the Nimbus to now running in my NovaBlast. My Novablast keep my feet comfortable for many miles and balanced and well cushioned for the best support. Your feet should feel like you’re floating on clouds while running! I have about 5 pairs and rotate them throughout the week for even wear. Here is a link to my favorite pair.

A good post run meal

This is the second most important non negiotable for me. If I don’t eat something right after a run, my body doesn’t fully recover as normal. Fueling your body before and after is very important. It is crucial to repair muscle microtears, help balance out electrolytes, rehydrate, and help avoid extreme fatigue as well as faster recovery and reduced soreness. Running makes you HANGRY and no one wants to be hangry.

Using a good sunscreen

As a runner, you spend a lot of time outside.  Regardless of how much sun you can visibly see, outdoor time calls for a good sunscreen to protect your face and body. I have run without sunscreen as well, and my face definitely feels the burn after. I have tried other sunscreen brands, but I LOVE this one. It’s not heavy on the face, and it moisturizes the skin very well. They also have a tinted version. I get mine at Ulta, but it’s also available online at Amazon.

Wearing a comfortable running outfit

My running outfits have definitely changed over the years of running. I’ve gone from throwing on whatever to wearing stuff that I didn’t feel comfortable running into finding my own style now. I definitely believe if you feel good, you look good, you run best. I don’t have a full closet of running clothes, but I have multiple staples that I stick to and can’t run without now. I am OBSESSED with Lululemons cropped Swiftly Tech Cropped Long-Sleeve Shirt and rotate between a couple colors and their Shake It Out High-Rise Running Short 2.5 shorts. All their running shorts are my favorite. The quality is really good, and as a runner who is constantly washing their post run outfits, their material is very durable.

Charged phone and a good music Playlist

A charged phone is very important to me because  it makes me feel safe. I can take calls if I need to, send a text, share my location, and track my mileage.  I have learned from previous experiences of going out without a full battery, trying to guess how far I can go without my phone turning off, and it makes my run stressful. A good playlist is also a must so that I am able to continue my run without stopping and looking for good music.

Thanks for reading, friends! I hope my tips can encourage you to start running if it’s something you have been wanting to do or get out for a good run today!
