Slow Girl Summer

Childhood Nostalgia: Outdoor afternoons waiting for the ice cream truck to chase after

All year, my alarm has turned off at the same time. My days have been packed with something to do from the moment I get up to the moment I get in bed. I live a full life before my 9 to 5:30, one during and one after. During the school year, my days usually consist of my alarm going off at the same time, making coffee, a quick home morning reset, driving my daughter to her bus stop, coming back to get ready for my day, getting my little ones up and dropping them off at school. I then clock in at work and spend my lunches doing a pickup and then a drop off, followed by dinner prep after an 8 hour shift all while trying to fit in a workout, park time, clean up, and finally bedtime. This girl wants to bring back slow summers. I want less screen time, more quiet early mornings, more time to pray, and more time to enjoy my little ones while they are still little. I want to lose track of time more often and find myself not choosing to  be busy this summer.

I did a couple of things this week to get a small start into a slow summer mindset. Here are some things I did as a girlie bringing back the slow girl summer.

Spending time in my garden

Who knew I had such a green thumb?.

I took time to do a small garden clean up. Normally, it is my husband doing the maintenance on our garden, and I take care of the watering, but I figured why not get my hands dirty and feel accomplished of the work I put in. Also, though, gardening does wonders for your mind. I put it up there next to running in natural ways to release stress. I’m just saying, for all your girls that are looking for a hobby. My goal is to continue to get my kids involved in expanding our garden. Leaving a published article on how gardening has helped us learn many things.

Cooking up fun, different meals

Made something fun we don’t normally make: Carne asada baked potatoes

I am a girl who likes to eat the same thing over and over. Unfortunately for me, my family does not love the same foods that I love – think salads, LOL. This can sometimes leave us scrambling, trying to think of what favorite dish we are rotating during the week after a long day at work. My goal in the past years has been to enjoy cooking and not be afraid to try different dishes. This week, I made some delicious Carne Asada Baked potatoes. They were, in fact, very satisfying to make and very delicious. It felt like time stood still as I took my time to follow a recipe, and even nicer was everyone loving dinner.

Spent more time at the park

Beli at park with us

Getting our kids outdoors for a walk or to the park is very important to us as a family. We have even made it out to the park right as the sun is setting, and it allows our kids to move their bodies and be tired right before bedtime. While sometimes we can make it out two or three times, my goal is to move our bodies every single weekday. We almost hit our goal this week and even got to bring along our cute cousin Beli!

Barn Trips with the kids

Friday trip with the kids

There are places like our local Avila Barn that we tend to only go to at special times throughout the year. This week, I requested a day off, and we  headed out to feed the barn animals. The kids loved it, and we were able to indulge in some of their yummy treats. It was not so crowded as we are used to it being, so that was a big plus! I loved that my kids were so excited that we drove out on a weekday to do this, and they got a break from the normal scheduling. Here is to many more lunchtime or random day off outdoor activities.

Night time runs

Night time runs are the best

Ok, so something that I missed so dearly were my night time runs. There is something so special to me about walking out for a good run at night time when the world seems to be a little quieter. You can feel a cooler breeze, you can hear the streets settling down, night time adrenaline kicks in, and you get the best sleep ever. I had stopped going on my night runs, and this week, I made it a goal to start again, even if once a week

Are you a busy summer kind of girl or more of a slow summer girl? Whatever it is that you are, I hope that this summer allows you to make the best memories ever.
